Located at the junction where the Academy Heights, Paradise, and Westowne neighborhoods all come together, Overbrook Road is a delightful avenue connecting Edmondson Avenue and Frederick Road in Catonsville, MD.

Catonsville’s Overbrook Road begins at Frederick Road near the Paradise Bed and Breakfast, and meanders north toward Edmondson Avenue. The homes built along this stretch of Overbrook Road were mostly built in the 1920’s and 1930’s, and they exhibit all of the charm and character that you might expect from pre-war homes in Catonsville.

Even though they were all built within about a decade of one another, the homes are a wide range of styles of the Colonial Revival era, with some surprises thrown in as well!

The Cape Cod style of home is known for its charming and timeless appeal. Characterized by symmetrical architecture, steep roofs with dormer windows, Cape Cod homes are often constructed with brick and feature shingle or clapboard accents, welcoming front porches, and a sense of classic colonial charm.

There are several Craftsman style homes along Overbrook Road, with their telltale columned porches, overhanging eaves, and low-pitched rooflines.

Many of these homes use natural materials such as stone and shake siding in true Craftsman style, echoing the natural beauty of the yard and surroundings.

Overbrook Road also features a couple of Farmhouse style homes. This one, with its distinctive red roof, white siding, and long covered porch, is a picturesque example of a 1920’s Farmhouse, with the added bonus of an attached garage, which appears to have been added in recent years.

The 1920’s was the height of the Colonial Revival movement, making up almost 40% of the homes built during the decade.

Colonial Revival homes featured details that were introduced to colonies by British, French, Spanish, and Dutch settlers.

You’ll find Dutch Colonial homes all throughout Catonsville, and Overbrook Road is no exception. There are several fine examples of this style of architecture along this lovely walk.

Dutch Colonial homes are easy to spot due to their iconic roofline, called a Gambrel Roof, or sometimes even just a Dutch Roof.

More rare in Catonsville than the Dutch Colonial, Storybook Colonial style homes (also known as Cottage Style homes) are just as easy to spot with their steeply pitched gables, flared eaves, and quaint details such as this home’s arched garden gate.

The Storybook style is also known as Provincial Revivalism, and typically includes details such as mullioned windows, mismatched rooflines, winding walkways, and an overall sense of whimsy.

This home’s charming exterior is evocative of Greek Revival architecture, another form of the Colonial Revival style. Symmetrical twin gables that are inset with stained glass windows frame the home’s covered front porch, which is accented with stately columns.
