LiveMARYLAND: Tips & Tricks For Starting A Garden
Ahh, Spring is in the air ... and you're thinking about starting a garden! Certainly, produce costs have increased (along with everything else) — why not take advantage of growing your own and making memories with family?
Our most important piece of advice: release all expectations if this is your first time … don’t overwhelm yourself with a project that’s too large or complicated!
When you’re planning your garden, consider the following:
Space and Size — indoor tower, porch, raised bed, large space to till / plant / fence / water.
Type of Plants — plan your harvest and growth: cucumbers will spread like a vine, carrots / potatoes / onions are underground, tomatoes and peppers may need support as they grow tall and wide.
Sun Exposure — does the location get ample sunlight to support growth? Southern exposure is best.
Soil — prepare the ground to support growth with tilling and compost for proper nutrients.
Watering — by hand with bucket, DIY or Professional sprinkler system, drip irrigation, timers.
Mulch — it's not just for flower beds... mulch will retain moisture and prevent evaporation during harsh summer days.
Pro Tip: install a soaker hose under a layer of mulch … and take it to the next level by adding a timer to the spigot!
Perhaps you'll want to start small (to learn) with herbs, tomatoes, and peppers — you can even grow tomatoes upside-down (yes, you read that right) in a 5 gallon bucket! It's a process ... but it's fulfilling when you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
