Elkridge is an unincorporated community in Howard County, Maryland, located along the intersection of Interstate 95 and Maryland Route 100. Elkridge occupies the 21075 zip code and has approximately 8000 households as of the 2020 Census. The school district for Elkridge is the Howard County Public School System.
Elkridge is the oldest settlement in Howard County, and has roots that go as far back as 1637 according to the Patapsco Heritage Greenway. A bustling port town along the Patapsco River in the 18th and 19th centuries, Elkridge was home to several active forges, tobacco plantations, and mills.
Present-day Elkridge is a suburban haven, where approximately 40% of the homes are single-family detached dwellings, 40% are townhomes, roughly 9% are condos, and some apartments, manufactured, and mobile homes. The lot sizes of Elkridge homes vary greatly, with townhomes having lots between .025 and 0.1 acres (about 1000 to 4000 square feet), and single family homes generally having between 0.1 to 0.4 acres (or between 4000 to 17000 square feet).
More than 75% of Elkridge homes are the Colonial style that is evident throughout much of Maryland, with a few Ranchers, Craftsman, Cape Cod, and Split Level and Split Foyer homes as well. Most Elkridge homes are either brick, brick-front with vinyl siding, or all vinyl siding, and most Elkridge homes have asphalt shingle roofs. More than 60% of the homes in Elkridge have Home Owners Associations (HOAs), and the average monthly HOA fee is $143 per month. The average Elkridge home has between 1600 and 1800 square feet, 3 to 4 bedrooms, and 2 to 3 bathrooms. More than 60% of Elkridge homes have 1 or 2 car attached garages. Some Elkridge homes have either fully or partially fenced rear yards. Almost ¾ of Elkridge homes have basements, and of the homes with basements, about half of them are either fully or partially finished.
The utility supplier for Elkridge is primarily Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE). Natural gas is available in about 60% of Elkridge homes, and is also supplied by BGE. Comcast Xfinity and Verizon FIOS do service most homes in Elkridge; there may be some areas of limited service in Elkridge for broadband internet, so it’s best to always check with the provider. The water and sewer supply is almost universally public, and is serviced through Howard County. There are a small number of Elkridge homes that have a well and/or a septic system. For our hot and humid Maryland summers, 93% of Elkridge homes have central air conditioning. And for our chilly winters, 62% of Elkridge homes have gas heating and 29% have electric.
Elkridge has several options for daily shopping convenience. At the intersection of Montgomery Road and Route 1 in the Elkridge Corners Shopping Center, you will find a Green Valley Marketplace, Walgreens, pizza, sushi, and Chinese restaurants, Bank of America, Truist, Sandy’s Spirits, and of course, Cindy’s Soft Serve where Elkridge goes for snowballs. On the other side of Interstate 95 you will find The Lynnwood Square Shopping Center, with a Giant Foods and Pharmacy, PNC Bank, Cafe Bagel, Lynnwood Square Wine and Spirits, UPS Store, pizza, Chinese, and Italian restaurants,, a Nail Salon, and a Hair Salon. Also near to Lynnwood is Kupcakes & Co., a well-known locally owned bakery with delicious treats. At the intersection of Route 108 and 175, you’ll find the Gateway Overlook Shopping Mall, with Costco, Trader Joes, Lowes Home Improvement, Best Buy, Ethan Allen, Alid, several large chain restaurants, Total Wine, Capital One Bank, Wells Fargo, and many more shops and stores. And if you can’t find what you need there, Elkridge is a short drive the The Mall in Columbia and Arundel Mills, as well as all of the shopping and dining available in Columbia, Ellicott City, and Hanover.

Elkridge has two well-established and well-known dining establishments. The Elkridge Furnace Inn is a historic property that offers fine dining and events, all in a beautiful setting along the Patapsco River. Elkridge is also home to Daniels Restaurant, which features down home cooking and an open air bar, and you're sure to find motorcyclists from near and far at this renowned establishment. Just outside of Elkridge, you’ll find the world-famous Guiness Open Gate Brewery as well as Heavy Seas Brewery, both of which offer tours, tastings, and events.
Elkridge is home to several historic sites, two of which are the Historic Troy Manor and the Belmont Manor and Historic Park. And Elkridge is a short drive to Historic Old Ellicott City, which is known for its antique stores and locally-owned shops, restaurants, and boutiques.

Elkridge is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream! All ages will love the Avalon Area of the Patapsco State Park, with it’s river access for swimming and tubing, pavilions, tot lot and playground, hiking trails, Grist Mill biking trail, and of course the Swinging Bridge and trail to Cascade Falls. You will also find Rockburn Branch Park in Elkridge, which offers a tot lot, trails, a rarely found and much loved disc golf course, and the Rockburn Skills Park, a great place for bicycle riders of all abilities to learn. Elkridge is also home to the Timbers at Troy Golf Course, an 18-hole course set amongst rolling hills, mature trees, and meandering streams. If swimming is your thing, you may want to look into membership at Watermont Swim Club, a private facility that offers open swim, swim lessons, and a swim team.
With easy access to Route 100, Route 1, and Interstate 95, Elkridge is a commuter’s dream. Fort Meade and NSA are a short, less than 20-minute drive from most of Elkridge, Columbia is just a few minutes away, and it’s only 10 miles to downtown Baltimore. Washington DC is approximately 1 hour by car down I-95, or ride in peace and take the MARC train from either the Halethorpe, Dorsey, or BWI Stations, depending on which is nearest to your Elkridge home.
